Welcome to Room 105!!

My name is Caroline Darling and I will be your child's first grade teacher this year. This is my twentieth year teaching first grade at Dundee. I also attended Dundee as a student when I was growing up.

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Iowa State University and my Master's Degree in Education with a Specialization in Early Childhood Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

My husband Mr. Darling teaches fourth grade here at Dundee. I have a eighteen year old stepson named Jake who will be a freshman at Hastings this year and a ten year old named Thomas who will be in fifth grade. We also have a little girl named Evelyn who turned two this summer.

We will be learning many wonderful things this year. Feel free to check this site frequently to see all of the great things we are doing. This site will inform you about any upcoming events and what we are learning. I look forward to a great first grade year!

The Daily 5

Throughout the year we will be using the Daily 5 as we work during the reading block. The 5 components of the Daily 5 are; Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing.

The students will be reading books from the reading series and books from our expansive book room that are on their reading level. Everyday the students will work on writing through journaling and writing projects during the reading block. They will complete different word work activities in the many literacy centers in the classroom. They will be able to listen to books on CD at the listening center and have the opportunity to read to different partners. These Daily 5 activities will help them to build on the comprehension, fluency and writing skills.
